TJ AP Precalculus · Full-year course

TJ math tests are much harder than class prepares you for. This course closes that gap.

One enrollment covers the whole school year. Each unit has short lessons on every idea, then original problems written in the format of a TJ unit test, every one with a complete worked solution. Students work at their own pace, before a test or whenever a topic feels shaky.

Who it is for

Current TJ students taking AP Precalculus, and parents who want to see exactly what their student is practicing. It works alongside class, not in place of it. Students who already understand the material use it to get faster and more careful under test conditions; students who feel behind use the lessons to rebuild a topic before they try the problems.

Explainer videos
Short whiteboard explainers are being added to the lessons, starting with the ideas students find hardest.

How the problems are built

Every problem is original to this course. Each lesson's set runs from core skills, to problems at the level of a TJ unit test, to a few that go past it, and each problem says which it is and whether a calculator is allowed. Solutions show every step, and each one ends with the mistake that most often costs points on that problem. Every final answer is verified algebraically before a problem goes into the course.

Lesson 1.2: Rates of Change

How to measure, compare, and read the way a function changes, using only algebra and tables.

The big idea

A function pairs inputs with outputs, and the two change together. When the input moves, the output moves too, and this unit is about describing how: how fast, in which direction, and whether that speed is itself picking up or slowing down. You will do all of it without calculus, using average rates of change, tables, and a few facts about polynomials.

Three questions run through every problem in this lesson:

  1. Is the function going up or down? (Sign of the rate of change.)
  2. How steeply? (Size of the rate of change.)
  3. Is the rate itself increasing or decreasing? (Concavity.)

Keep those three apart in your head. Most lost points come from blending them.

Problem 1

  • Core
  • True or false
  • No calculator
  • 2 pts

True or False: For f(x)=x2−6xf(x) = x^2 - 6x, the average rate of change of ff on [1,5][1, 5] is 00, so ff is constant on [1,5][1, 5]. Justify your answer.

Is the statement true or false?

Problem 2

  • Core
  • Multiple choice
  • No calculator
  • 4 pts

Let f(x)=2x+1x−3f(x) = \dfrac{2x + 1}{x - 3}. What is the average rate of change of ff on the interval [4,7][4, 7]?

Problem 3

  • Test level
  • Multiple choice
  • No calculator
  • 4 pts

Let f(x)=kx+2x+1f(x) = \dfrac{kx + 2}{x + 1}, where kk is a constant. The average rate of change of ff on [−12,3]\left[-\tfrac12, 3\right] is −12-\tfrac12. What is the value of kk?
